Join us to help commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States Army, as the Historic Florida Militia is honored to present a special free event with fun for the whole community!
The celebration will begin at the Oldest House Museum Complex (located at 14 St. Francis Street) reenactors from around the state will have a military style encampment. This encampment will included multiple time periods of US Army history. There you will see a 1565 militia group in honor of the First Muster, recognized as the beginning of the Florida National Guard. A 1775 Continental Soldiers Color Guard will present replicas of the first US Army Flags. There will be a continental militia waiting to take the oath to join the army. 1821 soldiers representing the Florida territorial period will be on hand along with their pre-Civil War counterparts. WWI soldiers and more will all be represented.
Military tents will be erected and displays for public viewing, including black powder demonstrations, will all be there. (A preview of this event will take place at this location on Friday June 13th.)
At 12 noon on Saturday the reenactors will head to the Governors House Museum for a special commemoration. A short ceremony will take place from the red, white and blue adorned balcony followed by more musket firing. Visitors will be encouraged to mingle with the reenactors for a once in a lifetime grand photo opportunity. Then its a march north on St. George Street with a stop at the Castillo de San Marcos. Once again our reenactors will be on hand to greet the public on the South Lawn of the Fort. Though some of these units historically would not have been stationed at the Castillo, on this special day these units will be on hand to make for a spectacular photo op.
This will be followed by another quick stop at the Colonial Quarter Museum (located at 21 St. George Street) for more visitor interaction and photos. Finally its back to the Oldest House Museum to finish out the day.
The best part all of this will be free and open to the public!
There will be free entry into the Oldest House Museum Complex on Saturday starting at 10 am. Events taking place at the Governors House Courtyard and the south lawn of the Castillo will be open to the public. There will also be free entry to the Colonial Quarter Museum.
