The struggle for Black equality on Florida’s “First Coast” drew international attention when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. twice visited St. Augustine in 1964. But why did he see the city as a vital battleground in the nation’s greater Black Freedom Struggle? How did events that occurred in the streets, churches, and beaches of northwest Florida influence the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act? How did events in St. Augustine connect between related movements that elsewhere in the South? And, most importantly, why should these events matter to us in 2025? Dr. J. Michael Butler, the Kenan Distinguished Professor of History at Flagler College and nationally-recognized expert of Florida’s civil rights movement, tackles these questions – and many others – in his presentation.
