For "Una Noche de Navidad" (A Night of Christmas), the Historic Florida Militia and the National Shrine at the Mission Nombre de Dios join forces to recreate a Spanish tradition that commemorates the search Mary and Joseph undertook for a safe place to stay before the birth of Jesus.
This is a bilingual event. The day starts with confessions and two Holy Mass services, one in English and one Español. The Las Posadas procession repeats from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mary and Joseph, portrayed by two young congregants, visit "inns" at various locations on the grounds. Members of the Historic Florida Militia, in 16th-century Spanish clothing, portray the unwelcoming innkeepers.
In addition to the Procession of "Las Posadas" (the Inns), the event includes Eucharistic adoration, sacred music, and a live nativity. After making the procession, you are invited to enjoy complimentary cookies and candy canes. You can also purchase soft drinks.
This is a participatory event, with guests walking in the procession. Download the event flier here.
