SUMMARY:Flagler County Public Library: Palm Coast Branch:Living History with Ft. Mose & Musket Firing Demonstration
LOCATION:2500 Palm Coast Pkwy NW, Palm Coast, FL 32137
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Learn about one of the most significant—and often untold—stories in early A
merican and Florida history when representatives from Fort Mose Historic St
ate Park visit the Palm Coast Library for an in-depth and engaging presenta
tion.

Established in 1738 near St. Augustine, Fort Mose (Gracia
Real de Santa Teresa de Mose) was the first legally sanctioned free Black s
ettlement in what is now the United States. Founded by formerly enslaved Af
ricans who escaped British colonies and were granted freedom by the Spanish
Crown, Fort Mose served as both a community and a critical military outpos
t defending Spanish Florida.

During this program, presenters wil
l discuss:

The founding of Fort Mose and the journey of freedom
taken by its residents
The role of Black militia members in protecting
 St. Augustine
Daily life at the fort, including family life, culture,
 religion, and military service
The broader impact of Fort Mose on Ame
rican, African American, and Florida history
The presentation will als
o feature a musket firing demonstration, giving attendees a firsthand look
at 18th-century weapons and military practices used by the fort’s defenders
. This demonstration helps bring the history of Fort Mose to life and offer
s insight into how the settlement functioned as a stronghold of freedom and
 resistance.
